IKAT (pronounced Ee-kot)is commonly associated with fabrics from India, Thailand and Central America. Ikat fabrics have been around for centuries. Ikat fabrics are made by dying the threads before the fabric is woven. The threads (natural fibres such as cotton or linen) are tied tightly together and dipped into dye. This creates an uneven and mottled appearance on threads allowing the pattern to appear to look 'hazy'. The method is similar to tie-dyeing, except that tie-dyeing is done after the fabric is woven. Beautiful and popular!
